On being afraid

The following is an entry I wrote a year ago and thought it had it's place here.

In life you may find that you do not have the strength to do some task that is before you. For some that may be speaking your mind against the crowd and for others that may be simply speaking at all. In such cases fear may be what holds you back, forcing you to stay your place and be incapable of action.

Often people cite mental strength as the way to overcome this obstacle, through sheer force of will one can do what needs to be done. But often this is a difficult thing to accomplish, especially for those such as myself who are more agreeable and less confrontational.

I've found that the easiest way to overcome this is a matter of perspective; to frame the problem is such a way that it appears insignificant and yet necessary to be conquered. There have been times where in the midst of a mad scramble to confront a large issue, that I have noticed things I largely had issue with in the past were no longer any issue at all. That in the presence of something relatively dwarfing it became the least of my concern.

This feeling appears to be very ingrained in coming of age, as the more one matures the more things of the past seem trivial. The trick I suppose is to have the wisdom to recognise that we should be glad to have the problems we have today as we don't know what might be around the corner.
